Family on RV TripIf you are planning a trip to Mexico, you can take your RV with you. Of course, just like any type of international travel, you'll need to plan ahead and take extra precautions to ensure that your vehicle is well protected on the road and your risks are otherwise minimized. If you have RV insurance in place, that's a good thing, but it may not be enough to ensure that your vehicle remains protected when you cross into Mexico. Here's what you need to know.

Does Your Insurance Cover Mexico Trips?

It is not common for standard recreational vehicle insurance plans to offer insurance protection once you cross the border. Unless your insurance company specifically states on the policy that you own that you have international coverage or North American protection, assume you do not have it. Also keep Mexican law in mind. The country requires those who are traveling across the border to have liability insurance from an insurer that is either licensed in Mexico or legally allowed to provide Mexican auto insurance. Not all U.S. companies can offer you that type of protection.

Finding the Right Plan for You

The good news is that you can obtain RV insurance that is right for you and provides you with the financial protection you need on the other side of the border. Several insurers to offer Mexico insurance for U.S. RVs and motorhomes. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing these types of insurance plans:
  • Basic Coverage is the lowest level of protection available and generally provides liability, medical payments, legal assistance and travel assistance.
  • Standard Coverage is a step up. It includes everything basic coverage offers, but it also provides you with benefits for collisions and theft (making it an important investment for most travelers).
  • Extended Coverage goes further by offering all the benefits of basic and standard coverage, as well as partial theft, vandalism and repairs. This coverage generally features fixed deductibles.
Before you hit the road to Mexico in your RV, consider the amount of insurance protection you have The right RV insurance is critical to keeping your vehicle safe from unexpected events while you're across the border.
